Wrightstown’s Ben Durocher continues to turn heads.

Combine incredible strength with outstanding speed and agility, you get a state title contender.

Durocher beat Edgerton’s Cole Bavery Thursday night to advance to Saturday night’s 132-pound state championship match.

Durocher, only 15 seconds in, suffered a bloody nose that caused two blood timeouts. During the second one, the decision was made to tape around his head.

Ben Durocher controls his opponent.

“You can’t let it bother you. It’s on the mat, not in your head,” said Durocher. “You just have to keep your focus and keep going hard during those six minutes.”

It was in the second period, when Durocher was leading 3-1, that Durocher and Bavery went crashing down out of bounds near the Wrightstown coaching area. Bavery’s head bounced off of the floor, which resulted in a brief injury timeout. After being evaluated, it was determined that Bavery could continue to compete and the match would go on.

“I was thinking that I needed to stay prepared,” Durocher spoke of the injury. “I knew he was going to come back and wasn’t going to stop.”

He didn’t, but neither did the Wrightstown sophomore.

The scrappy style of Durocher and the strong aggression of Bavery kept the head-to-head intense, but ultimately, Durocher still could not be stopped.

Durocher went on to win, 5-2.

“It’s an awesome feeling,” said Durocher. “[I] worked hard all year for it. Glad to finally accomplish it.”

Durocher will face St. Johns’ Aidan Medora on Saturday, who is 33-0 on the season.

“I’m ready to go. I need to get a good night’s sleep and get my mind ready for tomorrow.”
